2.IOCL INTERVIEW – 2017
Name – Ashish Rahi
VENUE – SOUTHERN MARKETING OFFICE OF INDIAN OIL CORP
I entered into the southern marketing office of Indian Oil Corp.
After some time we gathered in a hall. They gave a brief presentation about Indian Oil. This session is very important because 3–4 question would have been asked in PI.
After completing all the document verification formalities, I was given my batch no. for GT and GD, me along with my batch has been called for GD and GT which were conducted in same room and by the same panel.
They first started with GD, in the panel 2 ladies were there one of them was psychiatrist and just watching the behavior of each and every one and other mam was analyzing the discussion.
We were given 3 topics in which we had to choose a common topic, all topics were social topics after 2–3 minutes we selected the topic “Common Entrance Exam for Medical and For Engineering” We were given 5 minutes for preparation.
One of our batch mate started the topic but he misinterpreted the topic as one exam for medical and engineering, along with him some other guys continued but in between, we corrected the topic and then discussion originally started. In GD my suggestion will be don’t interrupt in between till one completes.
They always wants that each person should get a fair chance. Always try to start the GD but thing is that you should understand the topic first, also don’t wait for your second turn just put your best points in one go.
After the end of the GD they gave us paper in which some case study was there for GT, We were divided into the groups randomly. In each group 3 persons were there and we were given near about 10 minutes to solve the case study.
I dont remember exactly the matter which was there I only have vague idea about the topic, In that 5 students were there from a school and one of them stolen the password.
All of them recorded 3 statements individually, those statements were written in GT case study so we had to find out that guy who had stolen the password. They were mainly focusing on how we were discussing the topic and solving the case study, case study was not that important, they just wanted a good way of explaining the solutions.
After completion of GD and GT, we were called for interview and my turn came after lunch. Even though it was my 5–6th interview I was little nervous, I entered the room, in panel 4 gentlemen and one lady were there, out of four one was chairman.
I greeted them, after that chairman started the interview while going through my personal details form, I haven’t submitted any personal CV only basic details were there in their own format. They also didn’t ask for my file that I was carrying with me.
After basic information about my name, college and place of residence. He asked me to tell 3–4 favourite subjects.
I told him HMT, fluid and thermodynamics.
They asked me, about AC their first question was, If we put AC in closed room will it work or not?
They asked about, how do we maintain pumps without any failure for so many days?
Asked about maximum efficiency of engine.
What is surge in pumps?
Then next person sitting beside chairman asked
What Indian oil is doing?
Where are IOCL refineries located?
What are upstream and downstream companies?
I had given some of the answers but they were not that much satisfied.
Then mam asked, “Where do we use kerosene?”
I said in household purposes.
Then they asked me about colour of kerosene and why it is so?
So I said that kerosene is light blue in colour.
Then she asked, “Is it originally blue or something is mixed with it?
I didn’t know that time so I said,” No I don’t know.”
Then one gentlemen asked, “You are an engineer, If you would have been given marketing what would you do?”
I was already prepared for this question, I told that, “I have done so many projects, seminar, and workshops so I have learned management skills, and will use it, if I got marketing.”
After that another HR person asked, “Your father and mother both are teachers, who is you role model?
I said both of them are my role model and given some explanation.
After that they said “Ok Ashish Thank You’, I also said thank you and came out.
In interview I also used Hindi, The good thing in IOC is that “In GD, GT and PI you can select language for interview of your own choice that is either Hindi or English.”.

He threw some questions like
“Which compound has highest Octane number”?
“What is the octane number of petrol we use at petrol pumps”?
“What is the current specs of sulphur in BS IV”?
But I was so much un-prepared for the technical part that except one or two, most of the questions went like a “bouncer ”over me.
Disappointed he switched it over to HR persons.
*Now was the turn of HR interviewers to strip me*
HI: Well Abhimanyu it seems you haven’t touched your technical books from past one year.
I was like sir look down once at my CGPA and you will not ask this question again.

*Puzzled*
“Sir my parents often ask me about my college attendence and I always say its was well above 75 percent”.
HI: And what it actually was?
“Vice versa. Below 57 percent”.
Then followed a series of psychological questions
“Have your any colleague been in trouble ? If yes what you did to help him ?”
“I remember Newton’s third law but not second. Why?”
“Do you have any regrets in life? If yes then what?”
I tackled all these questions pretty well.
*Now technical interviewer chips back into picture*
TI: “Abhimanyu can you see a graph on the board”.
“Yes sir.”
TI: “What it represents”?
*blank*
After carefully watching it for 15–20 seconds something struck.
“Sir, its Head vs flow curve for the centrifugal pump”.
TI: Is it correct?
“No, sir.”
TI: Correct it.
I got up from my seat. Took the marker and drew this
TI: Can you explain me start up procedure of the pump.

10. IOCL Interview Experience of selected students based on GATE 2017 score.
Interviewed at IOCL’s IIPM (IndianOil Institute of Petroleum Management) Gurgaon on 19th June, 2017.
GD Choices-
- The state of Indian Engineering Education scene due to opening of way too many colleges.
- Should 0% Interest loans be provided to Farmers in today’s times of farmer unrest.
GT (Group Task) –
Only two IITs have made it to the Top 200 rankings of World’s Best Institutes. As directors of various IITs, find a solution to make sure that not just two but many more IITs could crack the Top 100 rankings.
The GD/GT Panel seemed uninterested, hardly even looking at which candidate is even speaking at GD. Payed a little more attention during GT to notice if we were interacting or not.
Interview-
Panel consisted of Five Members-
- Tell me about yourself.
- According to my answer from there-
- What you did after job?
- Would it not have been possible to do along with job?
- Best achievement while being at job?
- Describe in detail the CSR activity you mentioned.
(because of my job at Automobile Company ).
- BS-3, BS-4, BS-6 Changes in fuel and changes in vehicles design.

- Welding Vs Brazing.
- Bearings in IC engine.
- Give brief description about IOCL major businesses.
- Do you know how many refineries we have?
- What is our petrochemical brand name and its products?
The panel was very senior and yet very very humble and friendly.
They listened to each and every answer with at most attention, allowed me to answer with however much time I needed and placed counter questions only after I had finished my part.
After answering over dozen of questions over half an hour, the most senior of them, asked if anyone wants to ask any more (in a comic way) and we all laughed.
Finally, HR mam asked last question-
- Which was the gas responsible for Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the company name? (Because of my college was in Bhopal).
With the final answer, I was allowed to leave.
——————————————————————————
11. IOCL Interview Feedback

GT- U have to promote Pradhan Mantri Ujvala Yojna in remote areas of our country and for this list the problems you may face during this project and u will rectify them.

- What is coupling and what it is used for and list some of its examples?
- What is camber?
- Let you are shift in-charge at your shop floor and some contractor worker slapped on permanent worker and due to this all the permanent workers went outside the factory and decided not to work. What you will do in this situation?
By reading all this you might think that I told them automobile or physics is my area of interest but trust me neither I had written in my CV nor I told them regarding this.I don’t know why they were so much focused on automobile.
Actually they have a set of questions written on a page and they will ask you from those papers only unless you have some work experience.
So prepare your mind as they can ask you anything, even out of your domain.
Anyways best of luck!!.

12. BPCL INTERVIEW – 2017
NAME- RISHABH SINGH
VENUE – MUMBAI.
The venue of the interview is generally Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata or Chennai depending on your preference. Before coming to interview, just make sure that you have your CV prepared as per format given by BPC HR along with all other required documents.
The interview procedure is divided into four parts.
1) Group discussion – Here, you are given a case written in a paper. To give you the example, I will briefly tell you about the case given to me (boy! This answer is going to be long).
There is a company and you are a higher management official. You need to procure some materials from a vendor. You have finalized two vendors for the job (A and B). Both the vendors are willing to supply you the material at same rate with same quality. Both are offering similar services. Vendor A has offered you that he will get your child admitted in one of the reputed school which you have been trying for a long time. Now as a company employee which of the vendor will you choose?
Now, you will be given 5 minutes to write your views on paper. You can either support A or B. After 5 min, the people will start discussing. The selection committee member (generally 3) will be seated nearby. Number of people in a group will vary from 14 to 18.
What you need to do – Frankly speaking, your content doesn’t matter. You either support A or B, it won’t matter. What matters is how boldly you are presenting yourself. I have been part of many GDs and let me tell you, it is not easy to speak in a group of 16 people. So, you have to take your chances and speak loud and clear. One more thing you need to take care is, your hearing. Whenever anyone else is speaking, listen to it. The committee member look for this trait too. Also, never look towards committee members. The GD round is mass elimination round. Only 3 to 5 people are selected from a single group. So, if you make it through this round, you have a good chance. Also, make sure that you speak loud and you are fluent when you are speaking.
2) Technical interview – There will be a separate board member for it. You will be asked technical questions related to your subject. If you have been called through GATE, then I think this will be piece of cake for you.
What you need to do – Be confident. Like any other interviews, this is not only test of your technical knowledge but also your presentation. If you don’t know the answer, say it clearly. The questions they will ask will not be too tough. But make sure that you listen to them carefully. Also, be precise and to the point. Never drag the answer towards some other point. If possible, bear a smile. 😉
3) HR interview – You will be asked general questions like why you want to join this company, will you be comfortable travelling, what are your future plans etc.
What you need to do – Be prepared with questions like this. Diplomatic answers are always welcomed. Don’t get too serious. Also, a little knowledge of the company always helps (though I knew nothing).
4) Medical test – There are a number of tests carried out in a hospital after you have been selected. The only major thing they look for is the eye sight. If you wear spectacles, make sure that the power is within specified limits and you are good to go.

13. BPCL INTERVIEW – 2016

Initially they shortlisted based on CGPA. General/OBC-60% & above CGPA. SC/ST/PWD-50% & above hCGPA.No current arrear.
Group discussion:-
The shortlisted students were grouped (each group 10).
There were three authorities in the GD hall. Initially we were given a sheet with a case study. Then they gave 7 mins to make up points to speak. After 7 mins the discussion started. I wasnt able to make up points within the given time. But the GD has started. I was listening to others to get an idea. All the members spoke except me. I was the last to speak. Everyone was talking about a single point/case. So I thought of making a smart move by bringing up a new point and I justified it. Then the others started talking more but they constrained to a single point. I was listening to all, as I do always. Finally, each one of us were asked to summarize the GD. I summarized pretty good by mentioning the important points discussed by others and also concluded it decently.
2 members from each group(totally 16) were shortlisted for the next round. Myself being one of them.

Me: Started speaking about my schooling. Responsibilities under taken and acheivements during my schooling. My interests in sports, band. About my college life. The things tat I learnt. My work towards society and blah blah. (I made them feel as if I am so social, energetic, hard working. But to be frank most of the things were not true)(.
P1: Think we can now jump into technical questions.
P2: Do u know about Fluid dynamics?
Me: No Sir. (I knew few things but dint wanna get red handed)
P3: What about thermodynamics?
Me: No Sir. (I just hated that subject)
P1: As a mechanical engineer how could be without knowing these basic subjects. By the way what is your area of interest? (his tone was bit rude)
Me: Strength of materials.
P2: Other than that?
Me: Heat treatment.
P1: You only know about these two subjects? What about the other subjects?

Me: Actually my professor said this during the lecture. (But the truth is my roommate said these things to me)
P4: Well!! You know kannada? (Looking into my CV)
Me: Yes sir. Its my mother tongue. My grandfather shifted into Tamilnadu.
P4: Its good to know many languages. And you said that you are so social. If we place you somewhere in Rajasthan where you are the only one in office and you dont have a company to share your things, how will you manage?
Me: If it so, then mobile is my only friend. (Sarcastically)
The members started laughing out louder.(This gave me more confidence).
P4: If we give you a sales job, will you accept it?
Me: Obviously yes, bcoz its BPCL.
P3: He loves BPCL more than us. (looking at P4).
P4: Its nice to hear.
P2: well. Can you draw Iron carbide diagram?
Me: (took a sheet and explained it. Their look showed that they were very much convinced with my answer)
P2: What is BCC and FCC?
Me: Body centered cubic and Face centered cubic.
P2: Can u draw?
Me: Explained.
P2: Which is better? BCC or FCC?
Me: BCC (justified with an example)
P2: Show me the critical temperature line in Iron carbide diagram. And explain me about the various microstructures in heat treatment.
Me: (Explained like a king. As i was pretty good in that topic).
P3: How did u prepare for BPCL interview?
Me: Googled about the company. Learnt about refinery processes. Surfed few basic things about petroleum.
P3: Thats good.
P2: How much do you rate yourself out of 10?

It was a panel with 2 members with white hair which showed their experience. Entered into the hall with lot of hesitation as I was the only one with CGPA less than 8.5(mine is 7.78). The other fellows were good in their academics scores.
Me:Good morning, Sir.
P1: Good morning, Monish. How is your day?
Me: Till now fantabulous Sir. (With a smile).
P1: Thats good to hear.
P2: You have got low CGPA. Why is it so? (The facial reaction was too bad)
Me: Till 12th I thought education is only about studying books and scoring marks. But as soon as I entered into the college, I realized that it is not true and good education should develop one’s personality. And so I started participating in NSO, NCC. Mingled with many people and came to know what an actual society is.
P1: I havent heard such an answer from anyone.(with a smile)
P2: Still u shouldnt do that for 24 hours right? You gottu focus on studies too!!
Me: Think I have maintained a decent score. Moreover, there are many 8 pointers who couldnt make into this round. And I have done that. Hope this shows my capability. (spoke with confidence)
Both were very much convinced with the answer.
P1: Okay. Tell me some interesting stuffs about your native place. (Looking into CV)
Me: (Spoke for a while, pointing out about the tourist spots, tea plantation and blah blah)
P2: Can u explain the process done tea industries?
Me: (Explained like a boss. As I googled it, the previous night)
P2: Nice.
P1: Which is your area of improvement?
Me: Communication (Thought I can justify this answer easily)
P1: It looks like you are good in your communication and fluency.
Me: Thank you Sir.
P2: We are done. You can leave now Monish. All the best for your career.

35. NPCIL INTERVIEW – 2017
DATE – 02/07/2018
POST: MANAGEMENT TRAINEE
Firstly when I entered the room there were 6 members I wished them, they started with formal introduction from where you are, collage etc.
- Then asked to write down some favourite subjects, I wrote Thermodynamics, ,FM, SOM, Heat transfer & R.A.C.
- One panelist started with basic piston cylinder questions generally asked in BARC Interview as I had prepared some barc interview from quora or some where like if a piston and cylinder heated than which process draw PV diagram,if you put sudden mass on piston than which process draw PV diagram,if we put that mass very slowly in fractions than which process I said Isothermal than he told me to draw same PV diagram and than told me to compare both the process in PV diagram like work done, final pressure etc.I answered very well to these questions as I already prepared those.
- Than he made a opening to the middle of the cylinder to the atmosphere and repeated the same above questions like mass put suddenly and in fractions , now draw PV diagram (first upto hole when piston comes it is constant pressure process as it open to atmosphere but after that same concept adiabatic in sudden mass and Isothermal in slow mass) same above questions like PV diagrams and final state.
- how work can be calculated from pv diagram and what are the conditions to be occur to Isothermal and adiabatic processes.
- Then they move to fluid mechanics and gave a building with 8 floors and a pump is put on the base of the building with a water tank there and told that water is not delivering to the 7 and 8 floor why. I suggest NPSH Concept than they asked evrything about NPSH and told me to calculate NPSH of that pump.
- Next one asked about my intern from where and what you learned there ? Diesel locomotive works in varanasi than asked questions like….Compression ratio of diesel and petrol engine.
- kis engine mai kisko mix kar sakte ho petrol mai dieslel ya diesel mai petrol ?
iii. konsa engine heavy hota hai and why.?
- kiske cylinder ka pressure jyada hota hai ?
- Now SOM, Design of cylinder gave some data and told me to calculate the thikness.I assumed some diameter than asked me about material I told cast iron I took some fector of safety and UTS then they asked about UTS and stress strain diagrams for cast iron and mild steel and tensile test for mild steel , tumne kiya hai kabhi ? I told group mai kiya hai Sir collage mai ,then he asked kaise karte hai ? konsi machine hoti hai ? machine kya measure karti hai ? diagram of specimen etc. and kisme strain jyada hoti hai cast iron or mild steel ?and values of UTS and yield stress or both.
- Then they asked some questions to production like kon konsi process hoti hai forming ki?Uses of casting, wahan ek bell rakhi thi ye kese banti hai? iske upar layer kese hoti hai ? (electroplating) asked what is electroplating ? What is 3D printing etc. ?
- Then finally some questions about NPCIL, tumhare kota k paas konsa plant hai ?
Kabhi visit kiye ho ? Baaki plants kahan kahan hai etc ?
Last hum rajasthan walon ko maharasthra mai locate karte hai, will you face any problem ? and kon konsi PSU k interview diye ho ab tak.
Interview was for around 1 hour and 10 minutes. It was very nice experience to face such kind of interview.
